My Martial Art & Self Defence Story
I started training In Shotokan Karate when I was just 7 Years old, I didn't manage to get pass my white belt as I had an accident at school which left my finger badly hurt. The surgeon said I'd never have full use of it, and that Karate was out of the window. - 2 Years later I was training in Kenseikai Ju Jitsu with the Adults.
Kenseikai Ju Jitsu.
I was just 13 years old when I started training in Kenseikai Ju Jitsu under Sensei Phillip Courtney, Sensei John Griffiths and Sensei Dave Wilson
- all Under Sensei Fuji Linage.
Training back then was hard to say the least, whether you was young or old, male or female you needed to adhere and work to the standard.
No grades were "Given" and were always "Earnt".
Boxing.
I started my initial training in Boxing at the Highfield Centre in Dartford and 15 years later I followed my passion and ended up running a MMA / Boxing Gym, I trained men and women of all ages in various disciplines, yet boxing was the style that I always came back to in order to get someone to their peak fitness. I fought on a few unlicensed boxing shows but my real value and passion was in coaching others.
Wing Chun.
When was 21 years old I became Fascinated, in fact I would use the word Obsessed with Wing Chun.
This was the system that I gained my first instructor grade in, Learning Chi Sau, Pad work, all three empty hand forms, Wooden dummy, Butterfly and Long Pole Form.
BJJ / Catch Wrestling / FMA
I was fortunate that Bob Breaks JKD Academy opened up in Dartford whilst I was training in Wing Chun and against my instructors order, I secret went and studied there as well - This was the beginning of my "Cross Training" Philosophy that I later used to create my MMA Gym.
Whilst training in JKD (Jeet Kune Do) I trained In Catch Wrestling and was fortunate enough to train under Japanese Shooto & UFC fighter Eric Paulson (Who is the founder of Combat Submission Wrestling CSW).
It was with deep respect and admiration that I attended a seminar run by Dan Inosanto, I can say with a open and honest heart that this day changed my life. The skill level that this man possess across multiple styles and disciplines is phenomenal and the only thing that tops this is the mans respect, honesty and humility.
Dan Inosanto - Truly a Warrior in a Garden."
MMA, Vale Tudo, Animal Days & Pressure Testing.
Prior to MMA being called MMA, It was called "Vale Tudo" which means anything goes in Portuguese.
Prior to training in "Vale Tudo" we called it "Animal Days" or "Pressure Testing" (To Use The British Combat Association Term).
Practitioners of various martial art styles came to test their styles against the style of others in no holds barred/ minimal rules competitions.
K/O, Tap outs and the Referee stopping the fight was the way we recognised who had "Won" the fight, and I used the term Won lightly, as the true win was speaking to your opponent after and understanding what technique you had got caught with and with that information you would go back to your gym and incorporate that style into your own - This was named "Cross Training".
Despite the name, these days were actually quite friendly and no one got serious hurt, this being due to the amount of respect that was given to each other.
I fought in many of these.
Kickboxing / Muay Thai.
Combative Self Defence.
MMA.
